down at our local river we deal with this with a bit of fishing nylon and a quick tug.No need for a visit to casualty.

I haven't tried the tug method, but I have pushed the point and barb back through the skin then cut it with my cutters.

Hook in the hand not bad try treble hook through the nose i was about eight when it happened my brother did it to me dad cut the hook with side cutter pliers and i was off fishing again maybe it was the original nose piercing

Justin, you may be correct however this picture was taken in 2005 and I wouldn't doubt if things have changed there. I'm pretty sure these fish are yellotail amberjack, they're about 16-20" long in this photo. I dont think topsmelt get that big. http://www.mexfish.com/fish/y ltl/yltl.htm

Sure look like topsmelt to me and I've been there. There are no yellowtail in a tank like that.
